Description
Handmade laid paper in a rich camel tone made from brown canvas rags. This paper has a wonderfully warm colour which works beautifully for drawing and printmaking.
Brown paper was popular with many artists of the Renaissance and Baroque periods, including Raphael and Rembrandt, as a versatile medium for their sketches and studies. The toned surface of brown paper allowed artists to work effectively with both dark and light media. By using black chalk, charcoal, or ink for shadows, and white chalk or gouache for highlights, they could quickly create a full range of tonal contrasts. This technique was particularly advantageous for studying light and shadow.
